#316 DIY Paint Protection Films
Posted by Rvinyl on 27 March 2014 - 11:27 AM in Interior/Exterior
I just came across a great expose on one way that companies like Xpel get their templates for precut paint protection film. At first it seemed like a low-tech, labor-intensive way to go about it but the more I think about it the more I realize it couldn't be any other way. Check out my quick summary here and there is a link in the blog post to the complete expose on the TintDude form: http://blog.rvinyl.c...recut-ppf-kits/
Enjoy!
#284 What to Call People Who Like to Customize their Rides?
Posted by Rvinyl on 17 February 2014 - 01:04 PM in General Discussion
Just a quick question for you: If you had to think of the best name to describe people who like to modify and customize their cars and trucks what would it be? Tuners? Modders? Restylers? Or something else?

#277 Dupli-Color Caliper Paint
Posted by Rvinyl on 20 January 2014 - 01:29 PM in Wheels, Brakes & Suspension
Anyone have any experience with Dupli-Color caliper paints? I mean, I like the idea because of the the fact that they may actually protect your calipers from rust an corrosion but it almost seems like you just won't notice it unless you go for the yellow. Still, the fact that you can paint the disc and all of the brake parts makes it more likely to be seen I suppose. This is in comparison to caliper covers which can only be used on the calipers. Anyway, I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the subject and the following blog post may actually give more grist for the mill since it shows both: http://auto-trim.org...caliper-covers/

What does everyone think of do-it-yourself paint protection? Is it a job you would consider doing yourself or do you think it is something best left to the professionals? In terms of PPF, would you consider using thinner films like Rshield (at 4mil) which offer the UV protection and prevent light damage from scuffing but won't prevent rock chip damage at high speeds or would you bite the bullet and go for 3M or similar?

#248 Offroad Jeeps and EVs
Posted by Rvinyl on 24 December 2013 - 07:19 AM in General Discussion
Hi everyone,
I was just reading a post on the future of EVs in off-roading and four-wheeling circles and was left wondering what Jeep owners and enthusiasts think (see here for the article: http://auto-trim.org...ading-in-an-ev/). Will this catch on anytime soon? There's no question that the benefits for the environment are there but the tech is not quite ready yet. In addition there is the recent prediction form the US Dept of Energy that states that most cars on the road by 2040 will still use gas. So, is it just wishful thinking to assume that sooner rather than later we will be getting Jeeps and rock crawlers which are true EVs?

#239 Nexus In-Dash Mod
Posted by Rvinyl on 11 December 2013 - 10:24 AM in Audio/Video
Hey everyone,
I just found this post here: http://hacknmod.com/.../#comment-47294
It looks interesting and if you take alook at the photo it would appear that the dashboard has been modified to fit the tablet. I have contacted the poster to find out if they have any additional information. Anyone do this or a similar dashboard mod? Our dash kits are meant only for factory interiors and we don't carry much in the way of audio/video stuff so I'm kind of out of my range here. Anyway, I hope to hear from you.

#237 Nitrogen Anyone
Posted by Rvinyl on 09 December 2013 - 11:08 AM in General Discussion
There's a thread on Gearhead Central about using N2 in your tires. Supposedly there is evidence that it reduces deflation from seepage and can give you a 1% gain on MPG overall. The claim is that the N2 is larger than O2 but just looking at the Period Table you see that N has a weight of 7 and O has a weight of 8. These gases are diatomic so that means N2 weighs in at 14 and molecular oxygen at 16.From the weights at leat it seems that oxygen might be the bigger molecule so it should seep less. Then again it's been awhile so there may be more to this than meets the eye (think VSEPR theory). Thoughts anyone?
