#367 Get a Degree in Aftermarket Automotive Accessories?

Posted by Rvinyl on 30 April 2014 - 01:42 PM in General Discussion

Okay, as I was browsing the interwebs I happened upon something that blew my mind: degree programs and courses in aftermarket automotive accessories! Here I am with BAs in Philosophy and Italina Literature when I could have gone for this instead: http://www.northwood...sh/aftermarket/

And, surprisingly, Northwood isn't the only school to offer these kinds of courses. There are a few others such as the course offerd by Stark State as well (see here: http://www.starkstat...ive-aftermarket) and it seems that these are actually specifically involved with teaching you the elements of installation and theory. Anyway, has anyone heard of these or had any experience with them?

#317 Custom Wheel Accessories

Posted by Rvinyl on 03 April 2014 - 08:53 AM in Wheels, Brakes & Suspension

I know I have discussed a few of these products in other threads (such as the rim wraps and Duplicolor paint kits) but I wanted to do a more comprehensive post on the available options out there since they do seem to be multiplying at an astounding rate. If you're interested check out my post entitled What's a wheel accessory and why do I care?

Feedback of any kind is always appreciated and, if you read all the way to the end, there's a chance to get a prize (sort of a prize anyway). Thanks again and enjoy the warming weather!

#316 DIY Paint Protection Films

Posted by Rvinyl on 27 March 2014 - 11:27 AM in Interior/Exterior

I just came across a great expose on one way that companies like Xpel get their templates for precut paint protection film. At first it seemed like a low-tech, labor-intensive way to go about it but the more I think about it the more I realize it couldn't be any other way. Check out my quick summary here and there is a link in the blog post to the complete expose on the TintDude form: http://blog.rvinyl.c...recut-ppf-kits/

Enjoy!

#284 What to Call People Who Like to Customize their Rides?

Posted by Rvinyl on 17 February 2014 - 01:04 PM in General Discussion

Hey everyone,

Just a quick question for you: If you had to think of the best name to describe people who like to modify and customize their cars and trucks what would it be? Tuners? Modders? Restylers? Or something else?

I know this sounds like a joke (and I'm actually waiting to see the creativity of some of our forum members) but I have been giving this a lot of thought. Tuners make me immediately think of imports only, restylers make me think immediately of professionals and modders bring to mind something else entirely. SO, what do you call people who like to play with their cars?

#277 Dupli-Color Caliper Paint

Posted by Rvinyl on 20 January 2014 - 01:29 PM in Wheels, Brakes & Suspension

Anyone have any experience with Dupli-Color caliper paints? I mean, I like the idea because of the the fact that they may actually protect your calipers from rust an corrosion but it almost seems like you just won't notice it unless you go for the yellow. Still, the fact that you can paint the disc and all of the brake parts makes it more likely to be seen I suppose. This is in comparison to caliper covers which can only be used on the calipers. Anyway, I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the subject and the following blog post may actually give more grist for the mill since it shows both: http://auto-trim.org...caliper-covers/

#274 DIY Paint Protection Films

Posted by Rvinyl on 16 January 2014 - 05:31 AM in Interior/Exterior

What does everyone think of do-it-yourself paint protection? Is it a job  you would consider doing yourself or do you think it is something best left to the professionals? In terms of PPF, would you consider using thinner films like Rshield (at 4mil) which offer the UV protection and prevent light damage from scuffing but won't prevent rock chip damage at high speeds or would you bite the bullet and go for 3M or similar?

Anyone see the Motor Trend video on this: ? Thoughts? It seems super obvious to me who the winner is but is it even a fair comparison?

Hey everyone,

Today's hack is one which kind of surprised me simply because it involves a product that we are quite familiar with. I found it while trolling the interwebs on Popular Science's website and it is an idea that is both elegant and eminently practical: sheets of static cling vinyl that you use as window shades. Have an older model car that doesn't have USB ports in it? I stumbled upon a hack to retrofit your dash to make one. It is simple enough for a beginner and ridiculously useful. Check out the full post here:

#248 Offroad Jeeps and EVs

Posted by Rvinyl on 24 December 2013 - 07:19 AM in General Discussion

Hi everyone,

I was just reading a post on the future of EVs in off-roading and four-wheeling circles and was left wondering what Jeep owners and enthusiasts think (see here for the article: http://auto-trim.org...ading-in-an-ev/). Will this catch on anytime soon? There's no question that the benefits for the environment are there but the tech is not quite ready yet. In addition there is the recent prediction form the US Dept of Energy that states that most cars on the road by 2040 will still use gas. So, is it just wishful thinking to assume that sooner rather than later we will be getting Jeeps and rock crawlers which are true EVs?

#245 Precut Window Tint versus Uncut Sheets

Posted by Rvinyl on 17 December 2013 - 09:07 AM in Interior/Exterior

#242 Car Hack Thread

Hope that no one minds me starting yet another thread.

I would like this thread to be dedicated o non-cosmetic hacks and mods that can be done cheaply to your ride. In that vein I present two hacks:

Check out this amazing DIY intake hack here: http://blog.rvinyl.c...-hacks-hyundai/

And, if you have old, hazy headlights a tube of toothpaste will more than do the trick. Don't believe it (neither did I)? Well read on: http://auto-trim.org...shine-like-new/

Happy Monday!

#239 Nexus In-Dash Mod

Posted by Rvinyl on 11 December 2013 - 10:24 AM in Audio/Video

Hey everyone,

I just found this post here: http://hacknmod.com/.../#comment-47294

It looks interesting and if you take alook at the photo it would appear that the dashboard has been modified to fit the tablet. I have contacted the poster to find out if they have any additional information. Anyone do this or a similar dashboard mod? Our dash kits are meant only for factory interiors and we don't carry much in the way of audio/video stuff so I'm kind of out of my range here. Anyway, I hope to hear from you.

#238 Smoked Headlight Covers for the 2002-2006 Mini Cooper

Posted by Rvinyl on 10 December 2013 - 04:22 PM in Interior/Exterior

Hey everyone I hope your Tuesday's going well. We just got a bunch of rebate submission photos of a precut headlight kit installed on a 2002 Mini so, naturally, I did a blog post and threw them up on YouTube. If you take a look you'll see our customer (who now has tinted headlights and received a $20 rebate refund on his purchase) hand-trimmed the headlight tints because they are normally designed to cover the entire light. Not my cup of tea but he did a nice job. So, check it out and let us know what you think.

#237 Nitrogen Anyone

Posted by Rvinyl on 09 December 2013 - 11:08 AM in General Discussion

There's a thread on Gearhead Central about using N2 in your tires. Supposedly there is evidence that it reduces deflation from seepage and can give you a 1% gain on MPG overall. The claim is that the N2 is larger than O2 but just looking at the Period Table you see that N has a weight of 7 and O has a weight of 8. These gases are diatomic so that means N2 weighs in at 14 and molecular oxygen at 16.From the weights at leat it seems that oxygen might be the bigger molecule so it should seep less. Then again it's been awhile so there may be more to this than meets the eye (think VSEPR theory). Thoughts anyone?
